It's amazing value for money and one of the lowest cost sailing courses in the south.
DUE TO THE CORNAVIRUS PANDEMIC THE 2020 TRYSAIL HAS BEEN CANCELLED
LOOK OUT FOR RETURNING IN 2021
The sailing club is located in West Molesey on the Surrey / West London Border, near Hampton Court. We have great facilities, including a modern clubhouse and we sail on a 132 acre raised reservoir managed by Thames Water. It's ideal for learning to sail as there are no other users of the water.
If you are aged 17 and over and would like to have a go and learn to sail without the commitment of full Club membership then TrySail is for you. We run separate sailing lessons for juniors aged 16 and under on Sundays... check out our Junior Sailing School pages.
Tuesday nights have always been beginner sailing courses and cruising nights at IBRSC, a perfect antidote for a day in the office jungle. There's no racing, just a laid-back sailing training programme offering an opportunity to learn to sailing at a low cost. We are open for sailing training regardless of the weather; we've got indoor stuff to keep you amused if it is too windy to sail and we are flexible, so if there's something particular you want to learn, just ask.
New for 2020 TrySail is now operated as a RYA Level 1 and Level 2 course. This means we follow the RYA syllabus, safety standards as well as excellent coaching. In addition we can issue the RYA Level 1 and RYA level certificates at the end of the course. But don't worry, it's not just about the certificates. It's all about learning to sail in a safe and fun environment.
RYA Level 1 - will get you familiar with sailing boats, how they work and it has a focus on time out on the water. At the end of the course you will have the basic understanding of dinghy-handling techniques and background knowledge. A perfect course for anyone wanting to take their first try out of sailing. It's a great way to learn the basics of sailing for fun or before progressing up the levels.
RYA Level 2 - the chance to master the basics of sailing. At the end of Level 2 you will be able to sail a dinghy safely on the water in light to medium winds and you will be able to demonstrate some of the key sailing manoeuvres. It allows you to develop the skills learnt in Level 1-Start Sailing and learn new ones such as man over board.
The complete 14 week sailing course costs £195. That's less than £15 per evening! And that includes use of the club training fleet of RS Visions, Solos, Lasers and Toppers during training and whenever the sailing club is open (Tuesday/Wednesday Evening, Saturdays and Sundays). If you try it out and decide it’s not for you after the first two sessions we will refund £160.
The objectives of the TrySail evenings are:
- To have fun!
- To get people hooked on sailing
- To cultivate new club members
- To have the club open for fun sailing without worrying about racing
- To increase the bar takings!
TrySailors are welcome at the Club from about 1815. Non-sailing spectators are also welcome, but children must be accompanied by a shore-based adult. Well-behaved dogs are allowed on a lead and under control at all times.
Each Tuesday evening sailing session starts between 1830 and 1900 and we sail until dusk. There's an end-of-training chat to round off the evening's sailing and consolidate any learning. Each evening we will provide talks, help and lots of sailing, initially with RYA qualified instructors in RS Visions, and then on your own as you get more confident.
What do I need?
IBRSC will loan you a buoyancy aid. If you wear specs, please bring some string or a cord to secure them on your head. Long hair should be tied back and please don't wear jewellery. Leave valuable items and non-waterproof watches at home.
