Maisie Bristow - Leg 6, Round the World Clipper Race

  • 11 years ago Maisie Bristow had her first sailing lesson in an IBRSC Oppie. She is now taking part in Leg 6 of the Round the World Clipper race - sailing across the North Pacific!

Maisie Bristow Topper SailingPost completion of A- levels, Maisie went to UK Sailing Academy, on the Isle of Wight, and gained her RYA Yacht Master (YM) qualification. An intensive course, starting in September 2021, and finishing in February 2022, she clocked up over 2,500nm, and learnt all sorts of additional skills - aiming for a career in the Super Yacht industry.

A delay of 2 years in the Clipper Round the World race had left a 3 spare spaces for experienced crew to join boats sailing from the Philippines to Seattle in North America. Her YM, and having spoken to one of the Clipper Skippers, put her in prime position to join - and she is a watch leader on the boat called Dare to Lead. Overall, there are 16 crew on a 70 foot racing yacht.

Maisie’s sailing career started at IBRSC in the junior sailing school. She moved into Toppers, and gained some RYA certificates, and soon started on the Topper circuit, earning entry into the RYA Squad system. She has also sailed and competed in the Aero Squad, and sailed 29’ers and 420s.

Qualifying as an RYA Dinghy Instructor, Maisie has helped with training juniors at IBRSC in the sailing school, been part of the Keep Sailing team and also volunteered at Woking Sea Cadets - training new sailors.

Super proud parents, Hilary and Colin, are looking forward to heading out to Seattle mid April to meet Maisie when the boats and crews arrive. Overall it will have been 6,500nm trip, around 30 days afloat and sea conditions we can only imagine!
