With a gently increasing SSW wind forecast 23 boats launched for the Laser or should I say ILCA open meeting. A triangle sausage course was used to make best use of the open water at Island Barn.
Just before the start the rain came and the first race was sailed in a nice breeze but gentle rain. After that the rain eased, the sun came out and conditions were ideal – just enough wind to see some planing reaches but gentle enough for everyone to manage.
The fleet soon spread out but there was a clear winner in the standard rig with Alistair Brown taking the first race and proceeding to stamp his authority with a clean sweep as the day progressed. Behind him there was a lot of place changes and as the wind came up new sailors came to the front but by a whisker the locals Kim Gavin and Paul Johnson took 2nd and 3rd.
Having behaved admirably in the first three races the fleet got a bit excited in the final race with two general recalls before the RO imposed a black flag which thankfully restored order and no-one was penalized.
In the small Radial fleet Joe Warwicker showed how quick a radial can be finishing ahead of many standard rigs while in the hotly contested 4.7 fleet – the largest fleet – it all came down to the last race with Ed Rollerstone just pipping Edwin Cross, Joanna Leake and Reuben Hudson.
