The current racing sailing instructions will continue until the 6th June. Gareth Action will put out an email to the membership asking for a view of how the race structure should continue with some suggestions ( e.g. 1 long race then short then lunch or 1 long race, lunch, short races ( as before). The survey result will formulate the new structure. (Catering arrangements need consideration) The sailing dates are as per web site.
Laser - Simon - Laser Open planed for 3rd July advertised on WhatsApp (will use venti system for the event bookings. Race Officer - Colin Bristow.
Solo - Mike Jones reports new Captain is Peter Halliday the Solo Open is planned for the 25th September.
Aeros - Gareth - Very successful open meeting held (44 boats) use of two winches went well now delays, pre entry system very effective. Planning event for next year.
Toppers- Mike J and Jonathan L - Open meeting planned, there now 20 in the racing skills group, the club benefiting from a dip in other clubs enthusiasm. The Zone squad had limited places this year however but by getting more of the racing skills sailors into the regional training group we will have a good potential of getting more in the Zone squad next year. The 26th September is the selector event we need to aim for.
Feva - Brendon is class captain and unable to make the meeting however he is organising an open meeting
Optimist - Chris B there is an open meeting planned for the 24th July and the coaching is aiming towards that date. Chris is organising the open and Mike J has volunteered as race officer. Chris will arrange for Opi parents to assist with the event.
RS200 - Nick - there will be an open meeting planned.
RS 400 - Douglas - unable to make meeting no open this year consider for next year?
Following a discussion it was agreed that currently we would not permit Catamarans to sail or race at the club due to lack of water space and launching issues. Concern also with windsurfers during racing times
Action to John: Ensure byelaws are up to date and bring any suggestions to main committee for ratification.
Viking has been on the water and Ajax report plenty of activity finally after the lockdown. Ed pointed out the safety advantages of mast head floats which he uses and recommends for the club boats.
Ajax would like to add an additional container on the site for their kit - discussion deferred to main committee (Action to John)
Discussion on windsurfing on the Tuesday night alongside Tri-sail - all agreed important to liaise between activities to keep beginners and windsurfers apart.
Concern over use of club boats, some members may not have the right level of abilities / new to the boat / new to the club therefore there needs to be a notification system if a member is taking out a club boat.
Action John - To inform members via club notices - if they take a club boat out they must on a duty day inform the galley staff who will radio the duty officer informing them that a club boat is going out - rescue crew can then watch the boat to ensure safety. In addition members will be asked to self assess competence - they must consider themselves at least RYA level 2 before sailing a club boat without instruction.
Action john - club website to contain videos on rigging the club boats so new members can be directed to this instruction.
Action John /Jonathan to design a suitable sticker to go on club boats reminding members of risks and to check their abilities.
The club has a new archive under construction which with a set of permissions will house all the club documentation for all committee members to benefit from.
There are two PB2 courses planned over the next few weekends, unfortunately the refresher course also planned is not proving popular. Discussion on the need to improve and maintain the skills of power boat drivers, particularly in rescue.
Action Dave - Nigel to discuss when safety boat courses could be run taking some load off Dave and how a possible club refresher evening for instructors / PB drivers could be managed. Maybe with RYA type video instruction given. (Maybe an annual event)
This is proving very successful this year, and we are hoping for high student retention, this is put down to a good ratio between instructors and students. Plus starting the students in single handers is working well. The Picos have been great - good asset to the club. We have currently 10.
We now have a good number of club members helping out looking after the boats. Andrew prosser on Toppers, Gavin Hayhurst on Picos, Martin Waynowski on Visions, Brendon O'leary on Fevas and Chris Smith on Lasers. Suggestion is to invite these members to the next sailing committee. (Action to John)
Paddles (wooden) for righting boats - full discussion as an Action for next meeting due to time.
Helmets - general agreement that the club should purchase further helmets for Beginner groups. Action to Mike (sailing school) for discussion with his instructors.
