Junior Training Scheme Print E-mail

The Junior Training runs twice a year, with courses in the Spring and Autumn.

Many have put a huge amount of effort into running our junior training scheme, which is held on summer Sundays. We use a fleet of Topper dinghies and lots of enthusiasm. The course begins at 2pm and concludes at about 4:30pm with a chat and a drink before home-time at 5:30pm.

The aim of these sessions is to offer children and youths up to the age of 18, from complete beginners upwards, a structured course starting with basic theory and sailing in a straight line, through beating, tacking, reaching, running, gybing, to race theory and a number of short races. By the end of the course the participants should be able to join in the club racing programme on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays.

The course is based on single handed Toppers. The club has a number of boats available for loan, but parents will be advised to buy their child a boat should they start sailing regularly after the course. If they have their own boat now, or are in the process of buying, so much the better.

This course, as with all other activities at the club, is organised by volunteers and any offer of help from competent, sailing parents, would be most welcome. The course is open to non club members for £51 (and also get cadet membership) and club members for £10 if you own a boat and £25 if you do not.

  • Our lower age limit is 8 years. Children under 16 must be accompanied by parents who must remain at the club throughout the session. Parents are requested to assist either with the training or in the clubhouse; everyone is a volunteer and we need your help.
  • Bring a buoyancy aid if you have one, but we do have a club supply. These must be worn at all times on the jetties and boats.

What do I need?

Parents - please ensure that your children bring the following:

  1. Ideally participants should wear a wet suit, but old trousers and sweaters, preferably with a waterproof jacket will do. Old trainers would do as footwear; sandals are NOT suitable. Shorts are only appropriate on very hot midsummer days, although it doesn't hurt to tuck a pair in the bag.
  2. You will get wet, probably soaked, so bring a complete change of clothing, plus towel and shampoo. We have hot showers.
  3. Junior sailors should wear high factor waterproof suncream throughout the summer unless it is actually raining. Even cloudy days have lots of UV due to the reflections off the water. On hot sunny days juniors should also be provided with a hat.
  4. On hot days everyone needs to drink lots of water.

IBRSC will loan you a buoyancy aid. If you wear specs, please bring some string or a cord to secure them on your head. Leave valuable items and non-waterproof watches at home.
