Shifty force 3 to 4 winds ensured tight competition for the 10 Scorpions at the Island Barn Open. In the first race Dave Elston and Gavin Poullion (1981) led around the first mark and proceeded to pull out a commanding lead. Behind them the next three places were hotly contested by Rob Smith and Mark Lee (1939), Barry and Linda Wolfenden (1938) and Mike and Patrick Hicks (1943). Approaching the final leeward mark Elston and Poullion were caught by a gust during the spinnaker drop and during the ensuing capsize they allowed the following three boats to pass. Smith and Lee took line honours with the Hicks passing the Wolfendens at the top of the beat to take second. Races 2 and 3 were held back to back after lunch. The Wolfendens took an early lead in race 2 which was held to the end. The Hicks on this occasion were unable to pass the Wolfendens, finishing second. Janet Gatehouse and Alan Ritchie (1956) came third. Once again in the final race the Wolfendens led from the outset to take the race and the meeting. The Hicks showed consistency with another second. Smith and Lee took third place in this race ensuring a second overall on a tie break. There were 4 Juniors participating in the open, John and Andrew Rose sailing together finishing 6th overall.
